CRUISE THE ROWLEY SHOALS
One of the most pristine coral system's in the world, the Rowley Shoals Marine Park lies about 260 kilometres (170 nautical miles) west-north-west offshore from Broome. Regarded as one of the top 10 dive destinations in the world, diving the Rowley Shoals is very rewarding; with visibility in excess of 60 metres and an average water temperature of 27C.
The Shoals are the remains of three volcanoes that rose out of the ocean, the tops of which became colonised by coral to form a chain of three spectacular and pristine coral atolls, each covering approximately 80 sq. km. It is a rich and diverse marine wonderland offering some of the best fishing, snorkeling and diving in the world.
The three coral atolls, Mermaid Reef, Clerke and Imperieuse, of the Rowley Shoals are famed for their almost untouched coral gardens, giant clams and other shell fish. Giant potato cod and maori wrasse swim up to the boats and follow scuba divers around; trevally, mackerel and tuna hover in schools and colourful reef fish dart about the coral formations. Over 200 species of coral and 650 species of fish inhabit the Rowley Shoals. You can also see humpback whales, manta rays, hammerhead sharks and other large reef species. The coral and fish communities of the Rowley Shoals are unique in their composition, and relative abundance. Most cruise operators run cruises to the Rowley Shoals between September and November. These months are normally associated with "the doldrums" - a period of light winds and calm seas which are perfect for exploring this marine wonderland. |
